WHO ARE YOU?
I am married to Tina Schmidt and have 3 wonderful kiddos (Marcus, Adrienne and Grady). My hobbies are hanging out with my family and crossfitting. I am the owner of Advanced Roofing Specialists.
WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO CROSSFIT GREEN BAY?
I was golfing with a friend and he looked really sore. I asked him why he was so sore and he told me about CrossFit. I asked him if I could join him the next morning. I showed up at this dude’s (Grant’s) garage at 5:15 am and did my first CrossFit workout.
WHAT WAS YOUR STATE OF HEALTH BEFORE BEGINNING CROSSFIT?
I had just got done running a marathon and I was looking for something to train for. I thought I was in great shape. I weighed almost 200lbs. I never really stuck to a workout regimen for more than 3-4 months. I always got bored with it and quit.
WHERE ARE YOU NOW AND WHAT PROGRESS HAVE YOU MADE?
I made the Regional Team in 2013, finished in the top 5 for the team in 2014 and was in the top 10 for the team in 2015. I am lifting more weight then I ever thought possible and I enjoy working out.
HOW WAS YOUR ON-RAMP EXPERIENCE? WHAT PERSONAL BENEFIT DID YOU RECEIVE FROM ON RAMP?
I kind of did on-ramp twice. I started in Grant’s garage and then did on-ramp at the gym. To me it was about learning all the movements. I had no idea what CrossFit was. I was just there to workout and do whatever Grant told me to do. I received a lot of one-on-one attention in On Ramp which really helped me learn the movements.
WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO JOIN THE REGULAR CLASSES?
I was in the very first on-ramp at CFGB, so going into regular classes was the exact same as on-ramp.
WHAT IN YOUR MIND MAKES CROSSFIT UNIQUE? WHY WERE YOU SUCCESSFUL WITH CROSSFIT?
CrossFit is always different. You will never see a leg day, a shoulder day, or a bicep day…I think the competitiveness of it is what sets it apart from other workouts. You can also measure how far you have come because everything is timed.
WHAT SETS CROSSFIT GREEN BAY APART?
I have been to many other gyms and I believe the coaching is what sets us apart. The coaches are involved and attentive the entire class. The coaches guide you through a warm up and practice the movements with you before you start the workout. Also, CFGB has a lot more equipment then anywhere else. Anything CrossFit that you want to do can be done.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THOSE WHO FEEL LIKE THEY’RE NOT IN GOOD ENOUGH SHAPE TO TRY CROSSFIT? OR AFRAID OF INJURY?
I would tell them to try CrossFit Green Bay out. It doesn’t matter if you are in shape or not, you still are going to be sore after the workout. I still get sore almost everyday. Our coaches at CFGB do everything they can to prevent injuries by teaching you the proper way to move. I believe that benefit outweighs the risk. You can fall walking to your car and get injured just as easily as you can doing CrossFit.
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS GOING FORWARD?
My goals are to keep having fun working out. If you are having fun, making progress in your health is easy.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CROSSFIT EXERCISE? WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE?
Favorite exercise is handstand pushups, and my least favorite is rowing and chest to bar pull-ups.
