TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF!
I am a nurse at Bellin in the GI lab. I am married to Jake and have Amelia who is 18 months and newborn Avery. I like outdoors activities, now that I’m done being pregnant for a while I’d like to backpack again! I also like to quilt and cook, so I’m kind of an old lady.

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO CROSSFIT GREEN BAY?
I fought coming to CrossFit for a long time! Jake had been crossfitting for 2 years and coaching for almost 1 when I finally agreed to do just On Ramp as a compromise between us then go work out somewhere else. I fortunately fell in love with it and haven’t stopped coming.

YOU ARE THE MOTHER OF A YOUNG DAUGHTER AMELIA, AND A NEWBORN GIRL AVERY.  HOW HAS CROSSFIT BENEFITTED YOUR FAMILY?
My girls are strong!  And hopefully going to be super confident in who they are growing up.  Amelia already swings a kettle bell and lifts a barbell and loved watching regionals on TV.  When you tell her to squat or snatch she knows what to do.

Crossfitting through both of my pregnancies was great for me.  I had healthy, easy pregnancies with no complications and quick recoveries.  I was able to do a lot more during my second pregnancy because I had been crossfitting longer at that point.  (I had only been out of On Ramp 3 months before I got pregnant with Amelia)  My doctor fully approved of what I was doing and looked forward to updates on how many pull-ups I could still do and if I could still do Toes to Bar.

Eating well has also benefited the girls a lot too.  I was able to produce a lot of nutrition for them as babies, and Amelia refuses to eat mac and cheese and hot dogs, but loves broccoli and sweet potatoes.

YOU PARTICIPATED IN CROSSFIT WORKOUTS ALL THE WAY UP TO THE DAY YOU WENT INTO LABOR, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO MOTHERS WHO WOULD DEEM THAT UNSAFE OR UNHEALTHY?
I think if CrossFit is something you have been doing, even a short time period like with Amelia, it is very safe to continue, as long as you listen to your body and the recommended scaling based on the trimester you are in. Pregnancy is not a time to set new PRs or try to have the fastest time, but to maintain a healthy level of activity. Our coaches have worked with several pregnant moms now and are great at adjusting workouts and weights based on the trimester you are in to keep both mom and baby safe and healthy. If a pregnant mother was an avid runner, into yoga, or did zumba on a regular basis, people would expect them to continue that, so why not CrossFit?

HOW WAS YOUR ON RAMP EXPERIENCE?  WHAT PERSONAL BENEFIT DID YOU RECEIVE FROM ON RAMP?
On Ramp was great. I learned that I am capable of a lot more than I thought! The details were really taught well so I always felt safe in my movements. And I finally agreed to eat better. I was a person who would choose bread over cake, and now I rarely have either.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO JOIN THE REGULAR CLASSES?  WAS IT EXCITING/SCARY/ETC.?
I am pretty competitive, so I was excited to join regular classes and see where I would compare with everybody else. Everybody was very welcoming and approachable so that made the transition easier.

WHAT IN YOUR MIND MAKES CROSSFIT UNIQUE?  WHY WERE YOU SUCCESSFUL WITH CROSSFIT?
CrossFit is never the same! The gym I occasionally attended before I would do the same couple things, pat myself on the back, and go home and eat a bowl of pasta. At CrossFit I’m always doing something new and pushing myself harder. The community and the accountability they hold for each other has made me more successful with CrossFit, and living with a coach also makes it a little more difficult to slack off.

WHAT SETS CROSSFIT GREEN BAY APART?
We have great coaches, but because of that our members are also great coaches to each other. You see a lot of long term members correcting other people’s form and encouraging them. This shows how much we all care about each other’s fitness and safety. We also rally around each other with good and bad things, whether it be a wedding, an ill family member, or being gone for a long time with the military, we have each other’s backs and would do anything for anyone in our gym.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THOSE WHO FEEL LIKE THEY’RE NOT IN GOOD ENOUGH SHAPE TO TRY CROSSFIT?  OR ARE AFRAID OF INJURY?  IS CROSSFIT SAFE FOR EVERYONE IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL OPINION?
Even if you are in good shape you will still get your butt kicked! So you might as well do it either way. As far as injury goes, if you listen to the coaches and pay attention to what you are doing, you run a low risk of getting injured. Remember that being sore from working hard and injury are different! You will be sore. Tom is still sore every day and he has been doing this for a long time. As a nurse I do think this is a good form of fitness for anyone.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS GOING FORWARD?
I am going to enjoy not being pregnant and CrossFitting! I can’t wait to do a one rep max of my snatch and clean because I haven’t been able to since before I had Amelia! I want to see how much more fit I have become even while pregnant and or nursing a baby. I also want to be able to butterfly pull ups.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CROSSFIT EXERCISE?  WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE?
Favorite would have to be pull ups and cleans. Least favorite the typical burpees and thrusters.
